Holmes Community College students Kalee Beck of Carrollton, Ivey Devine of Winona, Sarah Elizabeth Hardy of Bentonia, Gracie MacGown of Madison, Shakeria Smith of Ackerman and Nathan Wildhaber of Jackson were all named to the 2020 Phi Theta Kappa honor society All-Mississippi Academic Team. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community. MacGown was named First Team, and the others were named to the Second Team.
Kalee Beck, daughter of Tonda and Mark Beck, is an elementary education major, a President's List scholar and vice president of leadership for Phi Theta Kappa on the Grenada Campus. She also serves as an Ambassador, SGA secretary and as a member of the Baptist Student Union. Beck was voted a Class Favorite both years at Holmes and participated in Beauty Review. Her community involvement includes serving as a judge for the Grenada School District reading and science fairs, hosting a soft skills workshop with Phi Theta Kappa and helping with Vacation Bible School at her church. Beck enjoys spending time with friends and family, going to church and painting. Upon graduation from Holmes, she is transferring to Mississippi State University to pursue a degree in elementary education and become a teacher.
Ivey Devine, daughter of Shannon and Bill Devine, is a psychology major on the Grenada Campus. She serves as president of both SGA and Phi Theta Kappa. Devine is also an Ambassador, work- study student for the Financial Aid Department, Hall of Fame inductee, President's List scholar, Freshman and Sophomore Class Favorite, as well as Freshman and Student Body Homecoming Maid. She enjoys reading, traveling, cooking and doing puzzles. After Holmes, she plans to attend Mississippi State University and earn a bachelor's in educational psychology and a master's in counseling. She'd like to become a high school or college guidance counselor.
Sarah Elizabeth Hardy, daughter of Melanie and Shane Hardy, is a psychology major on the Goodman Campus. At Holmes she is a cheerleader, Ambassador and Phi Theta Kappa president. Hardy is a Scholar-Athlete and President's List scholar who was nominated for Hall of Fame and won the Cheerleading Leadership Award as a freshman. Off Campus, she volunteers with Hope Hollow Ministries, Operation Christmas Child, is a children's church teacher and has packed care packages for military members. After Holmes, she plans to attend Delta State University to pursue a bachelor's degree in psychology and then attend the University of Mississippi Law School to earn a degree in criminal law.
Gracie MacGown, daughter of Sacha and Mike MacGown, is a chemistry major on the Ridgeland Campus. She is an officer for the Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and in her free time, volunteers at Webster whenever she can. MacGown also serves as a nanny for two girls after school and over the summer. After graduating Holmes, she plans on attending the University of Mississippi and majoring in biochemistry with a pre-med emphasis. She also plans on minoring in Spanish. After that, MacGown's goal is to go to medical school and pursue her dream of being a pediatrician.
Shakeria Smith, daughter of Carrie Smith and Rodney Smith, Sr., is a pre-nursing major on the Goodman Campus. She is a member of the Holmes cheerleading squad, Voices of Praise and serves as a MOSAIC tutor, as well as an MC2 tutor. Smith serves as Phi Theta Kappa Vice President of Membership, is a President's List scholar and received the Cheer Award. Off campus, she is a volunteer at Choctaw Medical Clinic of Ackerman and a tumbling coach at The Fitness Company. Her future plans are to attend medical school and pursue a career in the healthcare industry, specializing in surgery.
Nathan Wildhaber, son Trisha and Daniel Wildhaber, is an electrical engineering major on the Ridgeland Campus. He is president of Phi Theta Kappa, received the Golden Key Award and is a President's List Scholar. Wildhaber's hobbies include fitness, reading and making music. Upon graduation from Holmes, he plans to pursue his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University and then seek employment in the field of control systems and robotics until he can start up his own business in that industry.
