Puryear named MC’s School of Nursing Alumna of the Year

Holmes Community College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) instructor Barbara Brown Puryear was honored as Mississippi College's 2019 School of Nursing Alumna of the Year during a dinner on MC's campus on Friday, Oct. 25. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from MC in 1976, Puryear moved on to the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned a master's in nursing with a focus on mental health. She also studied at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and The University of Florida.

Puryear is in her 13th year teaching at Holmes in Ridgeland where she also serves as chair of the Faculty Development Committee. In addition to teaching, she also works with Ascendant Consulting and does independent consultation, performing case management activities, life care planning, cost reserve analyses and legal nurse consultation activities. Puryear also has experience in specialty case management, pharmacy case management, coordination of psychiatric services and in serving as director of nursing, as well as numerous other positions, for various facilities.

Previously, she taught at Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee; Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee; Southern College of Seventh Day Adventists in Orlando, Florida and Madisonville Community College in Madisonville, Kentucky. Puryear is a member of the National League of Nursing as well as the Transcultural Nursing Society.

She is married to Steve Puryear, who works at Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems Extension (CAVSE) at Mississippi State in Canton. They have two daughters, Amanda and Erin. Amanda's husband, Clay Mansell, is a Holmes alumnus, and they have a daughter, AnnaBelle, who is in the 6th grade at Lovette Elementary in Clinton.
