Holmes Community College Adult Education student Noah Howell is well on his way to a bright future: the Yazoo City native recently earned a 30 on the ACT after earning his High School Equivalency (HSE). He also scored a platinum on the National Career Readiness Credential (NCRC) after studying for the HSE at the Holmes Yazoo Teen Center site in Yazoo City where the college offers Adult Education classes. Howell plans to enroll in Holmes on the Goodman Campus as an education major and Board of Trustees Scholarship recipient in the fall of 2021.
“Noah is a dynamic young man who has a very bright future ahead of him,” said Holmes Adult Education instructor Daphne M. Higgins. “A man of few words, Noah was very soft-spoken, but assertive with his responses involving his class assignments and activities. His ‘I Can Do’ and ‘I Can Assist’ spirit evoked an inviting level of confidence in many of his classroom peers.
“This competent attitude and knowledge base was also instrumental in his additional achievements within his other studies, including obtaining his National Career Ready Credential (NCRC) with a perfect score,” Higgins said. “All of his former classmates at the Yazoo Teen Center are proud of his successes and have all echoed that they know he will do well.”
Howell said that his positive experience in the Holmes adult education classes encouraged him to choose the college for further studies.
“Even though it was good class and quick, I enjoyed my experience while I was enrolled in the program,” Howell said. “Since I’d not been in high school since December 2019, it gave me the opportunity to complete a goal – to finish my high school education.
“I have to be honest, when I was initially asked to take the NCRC, I really wasn’t sure how this would benefit me,” Howell said. “Now that I have my credential, I plan to use it on all of the applications that I’ll complete for school and possible employment. My next goal is to begin my studies at Holmes Community College in August 2021 and major in education. After I finish there, I’ll probably head to Mississippi State to get my next degree.”My family is glad, no they’re proud, that I’ve completed my diploma and are encouraging me to continue setting and achieving my goals,” Howell said.
Holmes Community College offers Adult Basic Education classes in several locations in its district. These classes are open to the public for those who have not completed high school or wish to increase their functioning level to enter college, training, or the job market. The Adult Education and GED Department encourages all adults that are interested to become involved in one of its programs.
