This fall, Holmes Community College is offering a new science course, Medical Terminology for Health Professions (BIO 1813). This course is offered on all Holmes campuses as well as online.
The Holmes biology faculty members, along with Vice President for Academic Programs Dr. Jenny Bailey Jones and Ridgeland Academic Dean Dr. Tonya Lawrence, worked hard in the spring of 2021 creating and requesting approval for this medical terminology course that students can use toward graduation at Holmes as well as a pre-requisite for University of Mississippi Medical Center UMMC (and potentially other) programs.
“Our Holmes faculty always work toward goals that are in the best interest of our students,” Dr. Jones said. “This is reflected in this entire process of creating and receiving approval for this course. On a larger scale, this group of forward-thinking STEM Division faculty members have created something that will benefit all Mississippi community college students interested in health professions.”
Dr. Lawrence also gave credit to Holmes faculty members for bringing this course to fruition.
“When Division chairpersons like Dr. Gates are willing to put in the time and effort to develop a course, submit the course for approval at the state level, request it be added to our college course offerings and then develop the course for the best student experience, I am reminded of our mantra – #noplacelikeHolmes!” Dr. Lawrence said. “It’s this kind of thinking and planning that makes us a step above the others and our students recognize that.”
All course sections for the medical terminology class have successful enrollment.More importantly, the class was added to the Uniform Course Numbering System for all community colleges to be able to offer it as well.
“I am excited that Holmes is offering this course that will assist students in earning their Associate of Arts,” said Dr. Antoine Gates, biology instructor and chairman for the Division of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). “It will also help them meet the pre-requisite requirement for programs at UMMC and potentially other colleges, which is very helpful. The other instructors and I met a few times over the summer in professional learning communities (PLC) in hope of creating consistency between each campus and offering students the best experience possible. We hope our students are as excited as we are about this course.”
