Amber Mabus, Holmes’ co-chair of English and Foreign Language Division, was selected to present her innovative teaching ideas at the Two-Year College English Association-Southeast (TYCA-SE) Conference held recently in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
Mabus’ session proposal was selected to do an innovative idea demonstration. These sessions were designed to provide a great opportunity to share works in progress, research ideas, collaboration opportunities or teaching tips in an interactive session to a small group.
“The TYCA-SE conference provides invaluable professional development sessions led by community college English instructors,” Mabus said. “I was honored to share my experience and tools that have helped me make practical change in the classroom to help my students perform at their best with my peers from throughout the southeast.”
The presentation Mabus shared at the conference was “Utilization Technology to Benefit a Diverse Student Population.” She discussed how the college composition classroom hosts a student population that is more diverse than ever (includes traditional, non-traditional and dually-enrolled students) and how utilization of learning management systems and other online learning tools can improve classroom organization and increase student engagement and accountability.
TYCA- SE is a two-year college English association that connects teachers from the southeast portion of the United States. The organization is committed to providing a professional framework for activities to teachers, exploring issues relevant to improving teaching English, networking with other English teachers and encouraging students to study and research English at the two-year colleges.
In addition to being co-chair of the English and Foreign Language Division at Holmes, Mabus teaches English Composition I and II (including DE sections online), American Literature I and II, British Literature I and II.
Mabus has been with Holmes for 12 years; she started out as an adjunct Instructor (for Remedial Reading and later English Composition) while teaching English at Grenada High School, and was brought on as a full-time English instructor in 2015. Mabus is working on her Doctorate of Arts in English Pedagogy, Specializing in Writing Pedagogy at Murray State University.
