Two Holmes Community College Grenada Campus instructors presented at the Mid-South Educational Research Association (MSERA) annual conference Nov. 9 and 10 in Little Rock, Arkansas. As doctoral candidates in the Ed.D. of Professional Studies program at Delta State University, Tina Garrett, chair of the Social and Behavioral Science Division and psychology instructor, and Amy Land, English and education instructor, presented research they have been preparing to propose.
Participating in a paper session, Garrett shared her working proposal “Generational Differences in Instructional Strategy Preferences and Academic Success in Community College Students,” as she plans to teach content to multigenerational students to see if there is a difference in preferences for instructional strategies across generations. This study seeks to guide instructors in choosing instructional strategies that are most beneficial to their students. Garrett was recognized for her work as a recipient of a Research in Progress Award.
Participating in a poster session, Land shared her working proposal “Analyzing Patterns of Completion in Online Developmental English and Traditional Developmental English in a Local Mississippi Community College,” in which she intends to analyze pre-collected data to identify patterns of completion in developmental and traditional English students across face-to-face and online formats, employing other variables to see if any factors seem to be greater predictors than others. It is her hope that this could inform future execution of developmental English courses for increased success and greater retention of developmental students at the start of their college journeys.
While at MSESRA, Garrett and Land received much positive feedback and networked with many practiced researchers in the field of education, namely Dr. Walter Mathews, the founder of MSERA. During his tenure at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Mathews created MSERA in 1972 in order to allow researchers to further develop the field of education alongside one another. MSERSA is highly dedicated to being accessible, welcome and positive to researchers at all stages in college and career.
