Holmes Community College Director of Business Services Dr. Matt Surrell was recently promoted to vice president of the Grenada Campus. He stepped into this new role July 1.
“Dr. Matt Surrell is the perfect person to take over the Grenada Campus,” said Dr. Michelle Burney, who recently retired from the role of Grenada Campus vice president. “He knows Holmes Community College inside and out. He is fair and honest and will represent the college well in all capacities. I look forward to watching the Grenada Campus thrive under his leadership.”
Dr. Surrell holds an Ed.D and a master’s in accounting from the University of Mississippi as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from Millsaps College. Prior to Holmes, he was employed as a senior auditor at HORNE LLP for seven years. He has served as Director of Business Services for the past 14 years and taught Introduction to Business online at Holmes for the past nine and a half years.
“I am excited for Matt and this new role,” said Executive Vice President Sonny Sparks. “I know that he will be a good fit for Grenada. He has been in the finance department for the past 14 years and will be impossible to replace, which is why he will continue to have a role in it as he leads the Grenada Campus.”
Dr. Surrell and his wife, Jennifer, have three sons: Paxton, Kasen and Rylan. The Surrells enjoy staying busy with all three boys as they play baseball, soccer, tennis and perform in show choir. Dr. Surrell also enjoys hunting and fishing with his boys, running and drinking a cup of coffee with his wife.
An active member of the community, Dr. Surrell is a member of the Red Hill Church of Christ, the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the Community College Business Officers (CCBO) Association and the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College Business Managers (which he served as president of). In 2015, he was named Outstanding Business Officer for CCBO and in 2020, he graduated from the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy.
“I’m truly humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to work with the Holmes family on the Grenada Campus,” Dr. Surrell said. “To say that I am excited about this great opportunity and the future of the Grenada Campus would be a tremendous understatement. This campus has always been blessed to have strong leadership examples, and I pray that I can carry on that tradition. I look forward to many more years of educational and workforce training excellence, which has been a constant in this area of the Holmes district for over 40 years. There really is ‘No Place Like Holmes!’”
