Camden native Angela Boyd has recently been named the TRIO Student Support Services Director at Holmes Community College.
She is no stranger to Holmes Community College after serving as the SSS Academic Counselor for 13 years and three years before that she was the WIA Education Coordinator.
Boyd grew up in Long Beach, California, but came back to Mississippi when she started high school. She graduated as salutatorian of her class at Velma Jackson High School. She attended Alcorn State University on a full academic scholarship and received a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and later received a master’s degree in counseling from Jackson State University.
“It seems as though my life has come full circle from being a TRIO Upward Bound high school student at Tougaloo College to now being the new TRIO Student Support Services Director here at Holmes Community College,” Boyd said. “I am very enthused and overjoyed to take on the responsibility of this position. Obtaining my master’s degree in counseling 20 years ago afforded me the opportunity to work in my purpose, which is serving students. Now, I can serve them in a greater capacity.”
“I’ve been with this SSS program as the Academic Counselor for 13 years, thus my vision for this program as the new Director is to increase student engagement, incorporate more technology and social media promotion, and continue the legacy of Linda A. Jones, the former SSS Director,” said Boyd. Jones directed this SSS program for 16 years and announced her retirement at the end of the 2023-24 school year.
“Linda Jones is irreplaceable so I will never attempt to do that,” Boyd said. “I will, however, continue to build this program from her foundation and lead it according to God’s Will aiming to add to the success of Holmes Community College students. Being a counselor was not just what I did, it’s who I am. With that said, I will lend to my new position as Director my fortitude for accomplishing goals; my ability to see the ‘big picture’ in regard to program design, functioning, and student success; and my genuine, compassionate leadership skills to empower the best from my staff and students.”
Prior to coming to Holmes, she was a TRIO EOC Educational Advisor at Tougaloo College for three years. She worked at Catholic Charities-Our House for a year and as a reader’s advisor for the Mississippi Library Commission for two and a half years prior to that.
Boyd served on the state level as president of the MS TRIO Programs (MAEOPP) from 2017-19 after being vice president from 2015-17 and then as past president from 2019-2021.
She currently resides in Goodman.
