Holmes alumna Shakeria Smith visits Holmes to meet with students

Holmes alumna Shakeria Smith of Ackerman is one of those people who believes in giving back – which is why she accepted an offer to return to her alma mater to meet with Holmes students. Smith, who is employed with University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) as an ICU Registered Nurse (RN), came and met with students on the Holmes Ridgeland Campus during a STEM Social on Sept. 18.

The STEM social, organized by STEM faculty members on the Ridgeland Campus, gave students an opportunity to come have a snack, listen to some music, mingle and speak with STEM faculty and with Smith. This event was geared toward students either already in or interested in a STEM major and going into a related field. The informal setting allowed students to get to know one another and have an opportunity to ask questions about STEM majors, career paths and more.

Smith was a student on the Holmes Goodman Campus from 2018-2020, where she was actively involved on campus as a Bulldog cheerleader. During that time, she had Rosalyne Davis as an instructor who is now on the Ridgeland Campus of Holmes.

“I am so happy Ms. Davis invited me,” Smith said. “I loved having her as an instructor, I love Holmes and it is so great to be here.”

Upon graduating from Holmes, Smith attended UMMC for nursing school from 2020-2022. Upon graduation, she was immediately employed by UMMC, where she has been for the past two years.
