Two Holmes Community College students have been recognized in the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association (MCCCWA) statewide competition, earning top placements for their literary work.
Cayton Edwards of Lexington and Daniela Lewis of Greenville placed in the annual contest, which celebrates the creative talents of students across Mississippi’s community colleges.
Edwards, a Computer Engineering major, earned second place in the Short Story category for his work, “An Old Game.” On campus, he serves as a Holmes Ambassador and works in the library. In his free time, Edwards enjoys writing, drawing, running and playing RPGs and video games.
“Writing has been a passion of mine for many years, and this award feels like an acknowledgment of all the effort my teachers and I have put in,” Edwards said. “I am overjoyed.”
Lewis, a mass communications/journalism major, won third place in the Creative Nonfiction category for her piece, “My Mother’s Journey of Culture, Community, and Change.” An active member of the Holmes band and choir, she enjoys photography, singing, and creative writing. She plans to continue her education at Howard University after graduating from Holmes.
The awards will be presented at the 2025 Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association conference at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Natchez.
The MCCCWA, established in 1978, promotes and celebrates creative writing among community college students in Mississippi. Each year, Holmes Community College submits its top campus writing contest winners to compete at the state level.
