Goodman Campus announces Creative Writing Contest winners

GOODMAN — Holmes Community College has announced the winners of this year’s Goodman Writing Contest, recognizing student achievement in the short story, poetry and literary essay categories.

College officials said participation in the contest reflects students’ willingness to share their writing for evaluation — an important step in developing their craft. Entries were judged based on how they would be viewed by current professionals in their respective genres. First- and second-place winners will advance to compete with student writers from across the state in the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association contest.

Students interested in continuing to grow as writers are encouraged to enroll in Holmes’ creative writing and literature courses.

Contest winners will be contacted to arrange photographs for the yearbook and local newspapers and will receive additional information regarding prizes. Participants will also be invited to attend the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association Conference, scheduled for April 10 at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia.

In the short story category, first place was awarded to Mikayla Tew for “Watercolor Eyes.” Second place went to Mikayla A. Tew for “The Massacre of the Squirrels: A Parody of Cooper’s ‘The Slaughter of the Pigeons,’” and third place was awarded to Pares Greenfield for “The Fallen One.”

In poetry, Abigail Glazier earned first place for “A Whisper Over the Heart.” Second place went to Mikayla Tew for “Life of Want,” and Hannah Stanley received third place for “Letter from a Woman.”

In the literary essay category, Abigail Glazier received first place for “Willy’s Decline in ‘Death of a Salesman.’” Second place was awarded to Ceketha Herndon for “Phillis Wheatley vs. Thomas Jefferson,” and third place went to Mikayla Tew for “Paupers and Pennies: Humanizing Poverty in Victorian England.”
