Earn while you learn: Holmes to offer paid training programs this summer

Holmes Community College’s McGowan Workforce Training Center is offering a variety of paid summer training courses through the Mississippi Reconnect program, giving participants the chance to earn $10 an hour while learning valuable, career-ready skills.

All training sessions will be held at Holmes’ McGowan Workforce Training Center, located at 412 West Ridgeland Avenue, Ridgeland, MS 39157.

MS Reconnect Summer Schedule at Holmes – Ridgeland Campus:

The Material Handling course, offered either May 12-23 or July 14-25, will run Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. This two-week, 80-hour program prepares students for careers in distribution, warehouse operations or manufacturing. Students will receive OSHA-recognized certificates upon successful completion of training on the standard sit-down forklift, stand-up reach lift truck, and manlift. Participants must be 18 or older, possess a valid driver’s license and pass a drug screen.

The Intro to Welding course will run June 2-26 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This four-week class provides hands-on training in MIG, stick and oxy-fuel welding, covering safety, machine settings, rod classifications, gas metal arc welding, joint types, welding symbols and torch angles. Students will earn an industry-recognized certificate upon completion.

The Basic Electrical course will be offered June 2-27, with evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 – 8 p.m. Students will learn the principles of electricity, including amperage, voltage, Ohm’s Law, and how to work with series and parallel circuits. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a certificate of attendance and basic knowledge to pursue entry-level work in the electrical industry.

The Light Brigade Fiber Optics 1-2-3 training will take place May 5-15 and July 14-24, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. This multi-day course offers a comprehensive introduction to fiber optics, including cable preparation, termination, splicing, and testing preparing students for ETA certification.

The AWS Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship (I2PA) program will run June 2-27, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. This four-week, 120-hour course prepares students for entry into fields that support the infrastructure of the information economy, covering safety, workplace skills, electrical, mechanical and fiber-optic basics. Graduates will receive an OSHA 10 certification and the AWS I2PA certificate.

The HVAC Refrigeration course will be offered May 21-June 26 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m.- 8 p.m. This course covers refrigerant handling safety, brazing copper to copper and copper to steel, pressure testing, recovery, leak testing, the refrigeration cycle, basic troubleshooting and more.
