Group honors Ridgeland Campus as tobacco-free campus

The Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus received an Award of Appreciation from the Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition of Madison, Yazoo and Holmes Counties on Tuesday, April 11. Rochelle Culp, director of the coalition, presented the award to Ridgeland Campus Vice President Dr. Don Burnham following the Honors & Awards Program held in McGowan Workforce Training Center. Holmes was honored for having a tobacco-free campus and for protecting its employees and student body from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH)'s website, the MSDH's Office of Tobacco Control provides funding for 34 community-based Mississippi Tobacco-free Coalitions (MTFCs), together covering cover all 82 counties in the state and implementing tobacco control programs at the grassroots level. They partner with schools, faith-based and community service organizations, businesses, and a number of health advocacy organizations to provide education and resources to the communities that they serve, and provide assistance to Mississippi municipalities in working toward comprehensive smoke-free ordinances.
