Holmes to celebrate Law Enforcement Appreciation Week May 11–17

Holmes Community College proudly recognizes Law Enforcement Appreciation Week each year, which will be observed this year from Sunday, May 11 through Saturday, May 17. This week is an opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude to the brave men and women who serve in law enforcement and work tirelessly to protect our communities – on campus and across Madison County.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. This important observance honors law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve with courage and integrity.

The citizens of Madison County are extremely indebted to the committed, well-trained and hardworking members of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and its staff. In recognition of their outstanding service, the Board of Supervisorsalongside the citizens of Madison County – commend and thank this loyal and professional force for their unwavering commitment to keeping our county safe, secure, and thriving.

“Holmes is proud of our law enforcement presence and extends sincere appreciation to all officers who protect our campuses and communities,” said Holmes Ridgeland Campus Vice President Dr. Bronwyn Martin. “We honor their selfless contributions not only during this week, but every day.”

There are many meaningful ways to participate in Law Enforcement Appreciation Week, including several suggestions from the Madison County Business League and Foundation:

  • Paint the County Blue – Display blue ribbons on your home, school, church, or business—or wear a blue ribbon throughout the week.
  • Back the Blue – Wear blue to school, church, or work, and consider offering discounts or gift certificates to law enforcement officers.
  • Day of Prayer – Dedicate time during church services to recognize and pray for the safety and well-being of our law enforcement personnel.
  • Thank an Officer – Take a moment to personally thank an officer for their service. Communities may also choose to honor fallen officers through balloon releases or candlelight vigils.
  • Celebrate the Blue – Host a luncheon or provide small treats to show your appreciation to officers in your area.
  • Social Media Shout-Outs – Use #BackTheBlue to post your thanks and support on social media through messages, photos, or videos.

Let us come together as a college and community to celebrate the dedication and heroism of those who wear the badge. Their courage, professionalism, and service make Madison County -and Holmes – a better and safer place for us all.
