Holmes Community College has announced the winners of the 2025 Goodman Campus Writing Contest, recognizing outstanding student writing across multiple genres.

In the poetry category, William Winstead placed first with “In Front of the Mirror,” followed by Cayton Edwards in second with “Goodbyes” and Janiah Roby in third with “Finding My Place.” In the short story category, Cayton Edwards secured both first and second place with “An Old Game” and “A Man in Beast’s Clothing,” respectively, while Tarriyannah Cobbins took third with “The Girl in the Mirror.”

For personal essays, Daniela Lewis earned first place with “My Mother’s Journey of Culture, Community, and Change,” Mikayla Tew placed second with “Tiny but Mighty,” and Emma Downs took third with “Lesson Learned.” In the literary essay category, Adriana Johnson won first place for “Attitudes of the Spanish Toward the Native Americans,” Janey McRae placed second with “Christopher Columbus Compared to Hernan Cortez,” and William Winstead finished third with “The Value of Natives.”

Holmes English instructor William Chad Moorer expressed gratitude to all students who participated.

“It takes courage to put your writing out to be judged, and I hope all of you will continue writing,” Moorer said when congratulating the students. “Entries were evaluated based on how they would be viewed by professionals in each genre, and we are proud of all our student writers.”

In addition, all contest participants are invited to attend the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association Conference, which will be held in Natchez on April 11.
