English instructor William Chad Moorer announced the winners of the 2024 Creative Writing Contest for the Holmes Community College Goodman Campus. All winners receive cash prizes furnished by the Holmes Foundation. First and second place winners are forwarded to the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association Contest and will be published in Holmes’ literary magazine, Reflections.
In the Poetry Category, Shamya Walker of Camden won first place for “Deep Down,” Jay March of Tchula placed second for “A Broken Knight” and Walker won third place for “Mirror.”
In the Short Story Category, March won first place for “Hometown Hero,” and Demeria Moore of Goodman won second place for “Grandma’s Strength.”
In the Creative Non-Fiction (personal essay) division, Garian Edwards of Grenada won first for “The Voice of a Feared Man.”
Finally, in the Literary Essay Category, Katie Jones of Sallis won first place for ““Perception versus Reality in Passing,” Bella Settlemir of Kosciusko won second for “God of Love, God of Hate” and Alex Swilley of Kosciusko came in third for “A Good Christian Is Hard to Find.”
