Former Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus student Jack Owens of Brandon has been accepted into the medical school at William Carey University, an accomplishment he credits in part to the strong foundation he built through the college’s STEM department.
“Holmes STEM department, specifically Dr. Milliken’s Organic Chemistry summer session, guided me in developing positive study habits and learning the material in such a way that it is not strictly for testing, but applicable moving further in my educational journey,” Owens said. “By the end of the term, I was able to not only perform academically for myself, but also teach others, which helped reinforce my understanding of the material.”
Owen, son of Jerrolyn and Robert Owens, is a graduate of Brandon High School. His success at Holmes led to an opportunity to conduct medical research at Mississippi State University, where he applied his knowledge of racemic mixtures—concepts he first encountered at Holmes.
“Because of my learning experience at Holmes, I was given the opportunity to do medical research at Mississippi State with my newfound knowledge of racemic mixtures – the foundation of which was built through Holmes STEM,” Owens said. “I will continue to use what I learned about chemical interactions in the body, as it relates to Biochemistry, in medical school.”
Holmes takes pride in preparing students for future academic and professional success, and Owens’ achievements exemplify the impact of a strong STEM education.
In his free time, Owen loves to play tennis, go to the gym and play music for local events and church. He attends First Baptist Brandon and is a member of the worship team there. Owens has now graduated from Mississippi State, and looks forward to starting medical school.
“Ideally, I would like to practice pediatrics, but I am staying open minded as I start my journey to becoming a physician,” Owens said.
