As the demand for skilled drivers continues to rise, Holmes Community College is stepping up to provide opportunities for individuals seeking careers in the transportation industry. The college’s Workforce Development Department is offering a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) Class A prep class on the Ridgeland Campus, as well as a Professional Truck Driver Training Program.
The CDL prep class, designed to prepare students for the CDL permit test, will be held on March 31 – April 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The cost of the course is $25, and participants must be at least 18 years old to enroll. Successfully obtaining a CDL Class A permit opens doors to apply for Holmes’ lineman program as well as the professional truck driving program.
The Professional Truck Driver Training Program is a comprehensive six-eight week course that equips students with the skills needed to thrive in the commercial truck driving industry. Classes run Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., and are available in Ridgeland, Yazoo City, Grenada, Goodman and Kosciusko. The next program begins on Monday, April 7. The curriculum includes a mix of classroom instruction, controlled driving environments and road driving practice. Students will learn essential skills such as operating diesel-powered vehicles, understanding DOT rules and regulations, mastering shifting techniques, conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, handling cargo and maintaining accurate records. The cost of the Professional Truck Driver Training Program is $1,450. To enroll, participants must be 18 years or older and hold a valid CDL Class A permit.
