Legislature awards Wang, Allgood with 2018 HEADWAE recognition
Shae Wang, a computer science and mathematics instructor, and Buck Slade Allgood of Carthage, a pre-medical student, have been named Holmes Community College's honorees for the Legislature's HEADWAE (Higher Education Appreciation Day – Working for Academic Excellence) program for 2018. Wang, who has worked at Holmes for over 14 years, holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Fudan University in Shanghai, P. R. China, as well as a master's degree in computer science from the University of Mississippi. Prior to working at Holmes, she taught at the University of Mississippi and the University of Memphis. Some of the courses Wang has taught include: Computer Applications, Computer Concepts, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Statistics, Calculus I-III, Java Programming I and Chinese Language I-IV.
"Shae is a huge asset to the Grenada Campus and has always been an outstanding employee," said Grenada Campus Vice President Michelle Burney. "She is humble, dependable and most deserving of this honor. Shae will represent Holmes Community College well at the 31st Annual HEADWAE Awards Luncheon."
This is not the first time Wang has been recognized for her excellence in teaching; in 2011 she was named a Holmes Lamplighter recipient. Along with two colleagues, she represented the college at the annual Lamplighters Conference held in Corinth sponsored by the Mississippi Community and Junior College Academic Officers Association (MCJCAOA). Wang continues to stay active in professional organizations, serving as a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); the Mississippi Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (MAMTE); the Mississippi Association for Developmental Education (MADE) and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), an international honor society for the computing and information disciplines.
"I have worked with Shae both as a colleague and currently as her dean," said Grenada Academic Dean Dr. Myra Harville. "She is always willing to give her all to her students to help them understand. One of the best comments I have ever seen was on one of her evaluations where the student said, 'I have never understood math and Mrs. Wang made it all become clear to me.' That is pretty high praise in my opinion."
Following in her footsteps of excellence in education, Wang's son, Theo Young, recently graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and is currently working as a pharmacist for Rite Aid. Her daughter, Joelle Young, is enrolled in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi, double majoring in elementary education and mathematics. Slade Allgood
Allgood, son of Stacy Lynn Wooten and Jimmy Earl Allgood, is studying pre-med on the Ridgeland Campus. He is an Ambassador, president of the Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and a member of Focus Factor, a Christian organization on campus. Allgood was also a member of the 2017 Homecoming Court, serving as an escort for Freshman Maid Adrianna Watkins of Madison.
"Slade has the perfect mix of characteristics that make him a remarkable student," said Erin Renfroe, Phi Theta Kappa adviser and English instructor. "He consistently takes initiative and epitomizes a servant leader. These traits, combined with his intelligence, work ethic and sincere desire to help his peers, make Slade a deserving HEADWAE recipient."
Upon graduation from Holmes, Allgood plans to transfer to Mississippi College where he will major in biology, with a focus on medical sciences, and minor in chemistry. After MC, he plans to attend medical school with the goal of becoming a trauma surgeon.
"Slade Allgood is a very affable individual and I consider him an excellent representative for Holmes," said Chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences Joe David White. "He has been a steadfast student volunteer for the Department of Natural Sciences, a department tutor in chemistry and has the heart of a champion in all of his life's endeavors that I have witnessed."
Ridgeland Academic Dean Dr. Tonya Lawrence said: "Slade Allgood's selection as the HEADWAE student awardee is not surprising. He is a very active student at Holmes Community College and juggles all of his responsibilities very well while maintaining his outstanding academic record. He is a great choice to represent Holmes."
HEADWAE, which is supported by the corporate community and coordinated by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, was established in 1988 by the Mississippi Legislature to recognize outstanding students and faculty in Mississippi's colleges and universities. The honorees will be will be recognized at the 31st Annual (HEADWAE) program on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at the Jackson Marriott Hotel. The program will begin at the State Capitol with the Awards Luncheon following.
