Men's soccer hosts tournament to benefit cancer foundation
Over the Christmas holidays, the Holmes Community College men's soccer team took the time to make a difference in the lives of others. Under the leadership of Head Soccer Coach Matt Convertino, the team organized the 2nd Annual Winter Holiday Indoor Soccer Bash to raise funds for the For Kid's Sake Foundation. For Kid's Sake was established by the parents of Malia Jusczyk, a little girl who beat cancer, to raise awareness for and improves the lives of children with neuroblastoma cancer. Through the indoor soccer tournament held Jan. 2-3 at the Flowood Family YMCA, the team raised over $1,250 for the foundation.
"I would like to give another big thanks to all of the teams that participated in the Indoor Soccer Bash to raise money to improve the lives of children with neuroblastoma," Convertino said. "We more than doubled the number of teams from last year. On a personal note, I noticed that I have coached over 30 players who participated in the tournament. Very humbled to have been a part of the lives of so many players, and proud to see them participating in a worthy cause."
Holmes was able to sign up 11 adult teams from the Jackson area to participate in the soccer game. A team who calls themselves "The Goon Squad" won the Primera Division, and the team "Brilla u17" took first in the Segunda Division. Convertino plans to continue making the benefit tournament a yearly event.
