Matt Surrell of Winona, director of business services at Holmes Community College, was recently selected as a 2015 Outstanding Business Officer (OBO) Award winner for Region VI by the Community College Business Officers (CCBO) organization. This award is given to business officers who have made outstanding contributions to business and financial management in higher education.

Surrell will be recognized during the awards banquet at the 33rd Annual CCBO International Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sept. 19 – 22.

CCBO provides networking opportunities, educational and professional development workshops, and other resources to help business officers achieve success as they serve their respective community colleges. CCBO is widely recognized as the premier community college association serving professionals throughout the United States and Canada.

"CCBO is pleased to be able to recognize individuals who truly demonstrate excellence and exceptional service," said CCBO Awards Committee Chair Suzette S. Senn. "We anticipate an exciting year for CCBO and look forward to seeing the award recipients in Nevada."

Surrell, whose office is located on the Goodman Campus of Holmes, has served as director of business services for five years. Prior to his position at Holmes, he worked as an assurance/audit senior associate for HORNE, LLP, in Grenada for seven years following a one-year internship with the company.

Surrell earned a bachelor of business administration in accounting from Millsaps College and his master of accountancy from the University of Mississippi. He is a member of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Business Managers Association, the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO), the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), and of course, CCBO.

A man dedicated to his community, Surrell currently serves on the Winona School District Board, as a volunteer coach for youth baseball and soccer teams, and as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and active member of local mission efforts for Winona Church of Christ. His hobbies include watching Ole Miss athletics, hunting, fishing, and running.

Surrell and his wife, Jennifer, have three sons: Paxton, 7, and Kasen, 3, and Rylan, 4 months.
