Ridgeland Campus lauds Literary Contest winners
English instructor Dr. Andrew Kelly recently announced the winners of the 2018 Literary Contest for the Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus.
Winners of the Personal Essay Category included Austin C. Parker of Flowood, first place for "Champion of The Broken," and Samantha Jordan Banks of Yazoo City, second place for "Remembrance." Zach Goodman of Lena, Rachel Hairston of Jackson and David Waller of Madison also received Honorable Mentions for their essays.
Brian M. Jones, II, of Jackson was awarded first place for "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" in the Literary Essay Category, and Will Flasck of Madison took second for "Monkey See, Monkey Do."
Winners of the Poetry Category included Ashley Regan of Madison, first place for "Lady Chrysalis," and Codi Goulas of Lafayette, Louisiana, second place for "Acadiana Roots."
Finally, the first place winner for the Short Story Category was Lydia Fortenberry of Brandon for "Jack is not a Girl's Name," and Flasck placed second for "Moving Forward."
The competition was open to all students on the Ridgeland Campus of Holmes, regardless of their major, and entries were judged by the English faculty members. First and second place winners in each category will appear in Reflections, the campus literary magazine, and are sent to the statewide contest. State-level winners receive monetary prizes and publication in the literary magazine of the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association.
