Peers honor 2 Magnolia GOLD students Holmes Community College partnered with the Mississippi Army National Guard this year to offer a new military science program called Magnolia GOLD (Guard Officer Leadership Development). Two of the Holmes Magnolia GOLD students – Johnell Hartley from the Goodman Campus and Lane McTaggart from Ridgeland – were each honored by their peers with Certificate of Achievement Awards during the last week of school.
Hartley and McTaggart were recognized for best exemplifying the attributes and competencies expected of leaders and for their unwavering adherence to the Army values of loyalty, discipline, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Hartley is a freshman industrial technology major from Kosciusko, and McTaggart is a freshman criminal justice major from Madison.
The Magnolia GOLD program lends itself to students interested in becoming National Guard officers, whether they choose Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) or Officer Candidate School (OCS). Although there are additional opportunities for those already in the National Guard, there is absolutely no military obligation required to take Magnolia GOLD courses, and it doesn't mean that they will be required to join the Guard.
