Yazoo City location to offer workforce training

Holmes Community College will open its doors to students at its newest location – the Yazoo County Economic Development and Educational Center in Yazoo City – on Aug. 17. In addition to the eight academic class offerings (Nutrition, Intro to Criminal Justice, Beginning and Intermediate English, English Comp. I, Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra I), the new site will host workforce training workshops for local citizens.

Workshops planned for the fall include Customer Service Training, Oral Communications, CPR for Health Care Providers, and CPR/First Aid for the general public. Each workshop cost $25, and lasts four hours. Holmes will also offer 12 Exceptional Team Leadership workshops in Yazoo City, with the first beginning on Sept. 8 and the final one on Feb. 9. The leadership workshops will cost $50 a course, and will also last four hours.

The Health Care Provider CPR workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on three different dates: Sept. 1, Oct. 6, and Nov. 10. Led by Genette Pierce, RN, the class covers basic methods of cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults, children, and infants; human physiology; emergency scene assessment, and step-by-step emergency response processes. These valuable skills provide the basic ability to respond quickly when a person suffers sudden cardiac arrest. Keeping CPR skills fresh and certification current is the best way to ensure proper procedure performance that will save lives.

The CPR/First Aid workshop for the general public, also taught by Genette Pierce, RN, will be held on from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. on the same dates as the Health Care Provider CPR workshop – Sept. 1, Oct. 6, and Nov. 10. This course is designed for schools, businesses, and citizens who are interested in obtaining the skill and knowledge necessary to perform CPR, with the use of an automatic external defibrillator, and have the knowledge necessary to perform basic first aid.

The Oral Communications workshop is scheduled for Sept. 22, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This course involves discussion of how communication is key to a company's success. Specifically, it addresses the following fundamentals: body language skills, oral communication skills, and written skills.

The Customer Service Training workshop will be held on Oct. 15, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Also led by Chaka Turner, the course will cost $25 and last four hours. Participants will learn core skills all employees should have for company and career success, including exceptional customer service skills, business etiquette, active listening skills, problem-solving skills, and handling irate situations.

The Exceptional Team Leadership workshops, led by Michael J. Harbaugh, are based on the Center for Continuous Improvement's (CCI) nationally recognized leadership development process that has yielded measurable positive results in more than 110 different industries over the past 30 plus years. Each workshop will last from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and the dates are as follows: Workshop 1 – What is Successful Team Leadership?, Sept. 8; Workshop 2 – Preparing Yourself For Team Leadership Success, Sept. 22; Workshop 3 – Lead Others? First Lead Yourself, Oct. 6; Workshop 4 – Goal Setting For Success, Oct. 20; Workshop 5 – Turning Solutions into Action, Nov. 3; Workshop 6 – Leveraging the Power of Organizational Goals, Nov. 17; Workshop 7 – Making the Most of Your Time, Dec. 1; Workshop 8 – Motivation and Confidence, Dec. 15; Workshop 9 – Building A Successful Team, Jan. 12, and Workshop 10 – Creating and Sustaining Top Performance, Jan. 26.
