Holmes Community College recently welcomed Lori Morrison of Madison as a new instructor for the Culinary Arts program on the Ridgeland Campus. Morrison will teach alongside Chef Alexei Harrison and will lead courses in both culinary arts and baking and pastry.
Morrison, who lived in Meridian for 15 years before moving to Madison in 2003, brings a wide range of professional and personal experience to the classroom. She worked as a loan officer in Meridian before joining Nissan North America Manufacturing Company, where she focused on engines and transmissions and earned her forklift license through Holmes. She has also served as a church nursery director, owned a sewing business, worked in catering and taught exercise classes that promoted healthier eating habits and lifestyle changes.
In addition to her work experience, Morrison holds an Associate of Applied Science degree from Hinds Community College, where she graduated magna cum laude and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
A creative and hands-on individual, Morrison enjoys reading, sewing, working in the yard, baking, trying new experiences and listening to a wide variety of music. She is also passionate about true crime stories and says she loves “living in the moment and fully immersing myself in whatever I’m doing.”
Her love of baking led her to open The Yellow Squirrel Bakery three years ago. Although the business recently closed, Morrison said the experience gave her an opportunity to deepen her skills and share her passion, which she is excited to carry into her new role at Holmes.
“I’m passionate about creativity, baking and encouraging others to explore their talents,” Morrison said. “I look forward to inspiring that same enthusiasm in my students.”
Morrison is the mother of two sons and grandmother to two grandchildren.
