Alumna elected as Association of Surgical Technologists student liaison
Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus Surgical Technology graduate Bonnie Shelley Malone of Kosciusko was recently elected to be a student liaison for the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) during their national conference held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in June. She was also awarded a $1000 scholarship during the conference.
Ten other surgical technology students attended the conference in New Orleans as well, supporting Shelley as she was elected to her new position. Others in attendance included Mya Golliday, Jessica Holland, Meredith Moore and Mary Neill from the Grenada Campus and Mary Margaret Johnson and Lachynna Phillips from the Ridgeland Campus.
"We are very proud of Bonnie!" said Holmes Surgical Tech instructor Travia Shea Coleman. "She has represented Holmes Community College in an excellent way. She competed against 11 other students and was elected by her peers along with two other students from across the country. This is huge for our state and our college and I know both will be well represent by Bonnie Malone."
AST was established in 1969 and currently has more than 36,000 members and represents the interests of more than 80,000 practitioners nationwide. According to http://www.ast.org/, the organization actively promotes education for the profession; legislatively advocates for practitioner recognition; supports state-level constituent organizations; and has committed to students as the future of the profession. AST's primary purpose is to ensure that surgical technologists possess the knowledge and skill sets to administer the highest quality of care for every patient
Prior to beginning the program at Holmes, Malone earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. Upon graduation, she worked as a marketing and business development specialist for Tudor Consulting Group, LLC, in Marietta, Georgia, for six years. Malone later decided she was ready for a career change and enrolled in the surgical technology program at Holmes.
Now a Holmes alumna, Malone was a Dean's ACT Scholarship Recipient, a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Surgical Technology Program Class President and Surgical Technology Student of the Year, 2016-2017. During her time in the program, she completed 120 hours of clinical rotations at University of Mississippi Medical Center as well as 120 hours at Baptist Medical Center, 50 hours at Central Mississippi Medical Center and 48 hours at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. After passing her exam, Malone is now officially a Certified Surgical Technologist.
