Attala Center to offer Business Management

Attala Center to offer Business Management

The Holmes Community College Attala Center is excited to announce yet another program offering for the 2016-2017 school year, Business Management Technology.

The program is one of the institution's Business and Office Technology (BOT) concentrations offered through the Career/Technical Education (CTE) Department. All BOT programs include courses designed to prepare students for a variety of entry-level positions through selection of a concentration leading to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

"The Business Management Technology program should meet the current office needs for many businesses, producing graduates with skills including computer applications, human resources, social media and web management, and marketing. The program will offer certificates and an associate degree onsite after two, three and four semesters of coursework. The associate degree provides internship opportunities and an entrepreneurial focus. Mandy Burrell, who has both experience in and passion for entrepreneurship, will be the instructor. I am especially proud of the fact that this program was developed by Holmes instructors and then adopted for use throughout the state," said Sherrie Cheek-Vice President, Career/Technical Education at Holmes Community College.

Through the Business Management Technology program, students have the opportunity to earn a Technical certificate after completing the first-year, as well as the options to earn an Advanced Technical certificate or an AAS Degree.

NaTunya Johnson, Business Technology Program Department Chair is excited about the program expansion, "The Business Management Technology program has been a breath of fresh air for students, instructors, and the community. The new design incorporates more project-based learning activities, and a more hands-on nature of learning to keep students interested and engaged while learning relevant job skills for today's workforce. BMT graduates can secure employment in almost any industry or type of business; moreover, those same skills can be utilized by small business owners as well."

Some of the career opportunities that the BOT programs prepare students for include positions as an accounts payable/receivable clerk, an administrative assistant, a claims specialist, a customer service representative, a data entry clerk, an executive assistant, an insurance coding clerk, an inventory clerk, a medical billing clerk, a medical office assistant, a medical transcriptionist, a payroll specialist, a receptionist, and a tax/audit administrative assistant, among other possibilities.

BOT courses seek to provide a path for achieving successful employment in the workplace through the integration of academic, technical, and career skills. Coursework is delivered using face-to-face, online and hybrid formats. Students in BOT programs also have the option to join Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) business organization. PBL provides students opportunities to gain additional job-related skills to prepare them for future careers.

"The Business Management Technology Program is designed to develop our students into leaders, leaders that will develop businesses and continue to enhance our communities," said Business Management Technology Instructor, Mandy Burrell. "Implementing the program in Kosciusko should allow more students the opportunity to continue their education and build their future. We develop leaders, who develop people, who develop business."
