Recent Holmes Community College alumna Sykina Butts of Kilmichael landed a research assistant position with the University of Utah’s Applied Cognition Lab for the summer of 2019. As a research assistant, she will assist cognitive psychologists Dr. Joel Cooper and David Strayer with studies concerning the measurement of driver attention and distraction. Butts first met Dr. Cooper when Phi Theta Kappa honor society hosted a “Think and Drive” seminar on Oct. 16 on the Holmes Grenada Campus.

Jay Wilson, a history instructor on the Grenada Campus, was selected as the 2018-2019 Holmes Community College Humanities Teacher of the Year. He will deliver his scholarly presentation, “Mississippi’s Monumental Men: Jefferson Davis and J. Z. George,” on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. in the Corey Forum on the Grenada Campus. The lecture is free and the public is encouraged to attend. A reception will follow the presentation.

Holmes Community College’s paralegal program was recently ranked No. 5 in the 2019 Most Affordable Online Colleges listing. Holmes Community College Workforce Development is offering a variety of professional and personal development courses during the fall of 2018. All courses will be held in the Media Room of the D.P. “Pat” McGowan Workforce Training Center on the Ridgeland Campus.

The Holmes Community College Yazoo County Educational Center is offering community classes this fall. Two of the courses – Success Skills I and Residential Wiring – still have spots available for those who are interested.

On Monday, Aug. 6, Holmes Community College celebrated the upcoming 2018-2019 school year with a “Running of the Bull(dog)s” themed Opening Convocation on the Goodman Campus. The day included: a breakfast social, a mechanical bull riding competition, an introduction of new employees, a president’s message, break-out sessions and recognition of those who have reached milestones for their years of service to Holmes.

Holmes Community College was recently ranked #2 for Best Online Associate in Psychology Programs by TheBestSchools.org.

Holmes Community College is offering a hybrid Practical Nursing program to begin in the spring of 2019. Applications will be accepted Aug. 15 – Oct. 31 and the 15 applicants will be selected in November.

Holmes Community College Workforce Development will hold an Electrical Lineman Program information meeting for those interested in being a part of the Fall 2018 cohort on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. in the Science and Mathematics Building auditorium on the Goodman Campus. The meeting is mandatory for all potential students who are interested in applying to the 16-week training program.

Holmes Community College now offers a Residential Wiring Class at the Yazoo Education Center. The course will begin on Tuesday, July 17 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for 8-10 weeks. There is no charge for the course, but there are limited seats, so interested persons should register early. There are no requirements or prerequisites required to take this course.
