From Classroom to Critical Care: An Inspirational Journey Through Holmes Community College’s Nursing Program

For Princess Allen, the road to becoming a registered nurse wasn’t just a career path—it was a personal mission. A graduate of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program at Holmes Community College in Grenada, Allen has already made her mark in the healthcare field, working in the ICU step-down unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital. But her journey to this point has been anything but ordinary.

Allen faced significant challenges as she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse. Despite the demands of family life, she found strength and support through Holmes’ rigorous and empowering nursing program.

“If I can do it, so can you,” Allen said. “I’m a single mom of three, and Holmes gave me the tools, confidence, and support I needed to succeed.”

The Associate Degree Nursing Program at Holmes is a two-year curriculum designed to prepare students for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) and licensure through the Mississippi State Board of Nursing. With a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on lab work, and clinical experience, the program equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to meet the growing needs of the healthcare field.

Allen credits much of her success to the resources available through Holmes—particularly the ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute) tools that helped her prepare for the NCLEX.
“I passed my NCLEX on the first try,” she said. “The resources we had here at Holmes, like ATI, really made the difference. When I walk into a room at work, my colleagues and supervisors don’t treat me like a new grad. That confidence came from the training I received at Holmes.”

Looking back, Allen is proud of how far she’s come—and she wants others to know they can do the same. “My peers often ask, ‘Where did you go to school?’ I proudly tell them Holmes Community College,” she said. “If you’re thinking about nursing and want a program that truly prepares you for the real world, choose Holmes.”

Princess Allen’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of education. Through Holmes Community College, she found not only a path to professional success but also a platform to inspire others who dream of making a difference in healthcare.
