Holmes joins national effort to celebrate Adult Education & Family Literacy Week

Holmes Community College is joining the national celebration of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, highlighting the importance of lifelong learning and the impact adult education has on individuals, families and communities.

Throughout the week, Holmes Adult Education classes will host events to raise awareness about adult learning. Community leaders, business partners and civic organizations are invited to take part in classroom celebrations. Events will be held Tuesday at the Attala Center in Kosciusko, Wednesday on the Ridgeland Campus and Thursday in Yazoo City.

The observance is part of a nationwide effort led by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, or COABE, which serves more than 3.2 million adult learners through a network of more than 100 national partners. COABE works to equip and empower educators and learners, offering professional development, advocacy and resources for adult education programs across the country.

Adult education programs help learners improve literacy, develop job skills and pursue credentials that lead to better employment opportunities and stronger economic stability. Research also shows that learners who return to school often inspire their children’s educational journeys and strengthen civic life in their communities.

“At Holmes, we believe lifelong learning lifts up not only individuals but entire communities,” said District Director for Adult Education/HSE Earline Russell- Smith. “This week, we honor those who are making the journey, those who support them and recommit to making adult education accessible and effective.”
