Holmes Community College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) instructor Dr. Alicia L. Turner, DNP, RN, was recently selected as a volunteer item writer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Licensure Examination (NCLEX®). Dr. Turner is an instructor on the Ridgeland Campus.
NCSBN, headquartered in Chicago, is responsible for developing and administering the NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® examinations, which are used to determine minimal competency for entry-level nurses in the United States and participating Canadian provinces and territories. Passing the NCLEX is one of the requirements for attaining a nursing license or registration.
Approved by the Mississippi State Board of Nursing, Dr. Turner was selected by NCSBN to serve on the NCLEX item development panel of subject matter experts held in Chicago from July 27–Aug. 1, 2025. She was chosen for the honor based on her clinical specialty and nursing expertise.
In addition to her recent NCSBN selection, Dr. Turner was recognized by the organization Today’s Nurse as one of the Best in Healthcare for her integrity, experience, and dedication to the profession.
A Holmes alumna, Dr. Turner joined the Ridgeland Campus nursing faculty as an adjunct instructor in 2017 and became full-time in 2020. She previously served as head nurse on the 5D oncology unit at Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Jackson, working full-time before transitioning to part-time in 2020. She continues to work part-time at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), where she has trained new nurses on the kidney/liver transplant unit since 2020.
Dr. Turner holds a mortuary science degree, a practical nursing degree and an ADN degree from Holmes. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Jackson State University, a BSN from the University for Women and an MSN from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice from UMMC on May 23.
Her professional accolades include being named Nurse Educator of the Year in 2020 by Baptist. Dr. Turner is an active member of the American Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Oncology Nursing Society and Phi Theta Kappa Sigma Mu honor society. She also serves as Co-Chair of Education for Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi.
Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Turner enjoys reading, watching movies with her family, working in her yard, volunteering with her church’s food ministry, singing in the choir and mentoring new nurses. She and her husband Frederick have three children: Kaylyn, Maddison and Brandon.
