Holmes offers year-round Pell Grant
To the benefit of Holmes Community College students and others across the nation, the Federal Pell Grant continues its year-round status and is available to cover summer school. Students may be eligible to use part of their Federal Pell Grant eligibility for the 2018-2019 academic year to cover expenses for the current summer term as long as they are enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours or half time over the course of the summer.
Established in 1972, the Pell Grant is a federal program which makes funds available to eligible undergraduate students attending an approved post-secondary institution. Application is made through the FAFSA. The Pell Grant does not have to be repaid and is intended for students who are enrolled in a degree or certificate-seeking program. The amount of the award is based on financial need, enrollment status and the cost of attendance.
"Anytime students have the needed money to attend college it is great thing," said Financial Aid Director Dr. Gail Muse Beggs. "An additional Pell grant award for the summer helps students pay for classes and books without taking on additional student loan debt, which often times is the only funding option available for summer school. We are very excited that year round Pell grant is here for at least another summer. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students."
The reinstatement of the "summer Pell" is very beneficial as more and more students choose to take summer school in order to graduate and get a job more quickly.

For assistance applying for the Pell Grant, students can attend a "FAFSA Friday" session. FAFSA, or The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. The FAFSA Fridays are held in the Trek Center from 9 – 11:30 a.m. on every campus. This service is for current Holmes students as well as high school students and their parents, no appointment necessary.
