PTK engineering majors visit MSU, Keenum
A group of Holmes Community College Phi Theta Kappa students in the engineering technology program toured Mississippi State University on May 10 after receiving a personalized invitation from MSU President Dr. Mark E. Keenum.
Dr. Keenum served as keynote speaker for the Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter Induction Ceremony on the Ridgeland Campus March 6. During his address, he promised that if the students visited MSU soon, he would make the trip worth their while.
Holmes engineering technology instructors Lynn Boykin and Heather Mooney decided to take Dr. Keenum up on that offer, and invited the Phi Theta Kappa students in their classes to take a trip up to MSU prior to Holmes graduation on May 12.
"It was an amazing opportunity," Mooney said. "Not many students get a personal invitation from the president of a college to come visit him in his office and have one-on-one conversations with him. He even gave us a signed cowbell to take home as a memento from the visit."
A number of students from Holmes' engineering technology program transfer to one of the programs in MSU's Bagley College of Engineering, including recent Holmes construction engineering graduate Yoel Bacallao. He attended the fieldtrip on May 10, and will transfer to MSU in the fall to work toward a degree in civil engineering.
"I really enjoyed visiting the campus and everyone made me feel at home," Bacallao said.
In addition to the Ridgeland Campus Construction Technology program Bacallao graduated from, the Holmes Engineering Technology Department offers four other areas of concentration: Industrial Engineering Management Technology (Ridgeland Campus); Architectural Engineering Technology (Goodman Campus); Industrial Technology (Goodman Campus) and Drafting and Design Technology (Grenada Campus). Each area leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS); some areas also offer a Technical Certificate and/or an Advanced Technical Certificate.
