Ridgeland Campus hosts district MCTM Junior High Math Contest On Friday, March 2, the Holmes Community College Mathematics Department hosted the Annual Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) District Junior High Math Competition for area seventh and eighth grade students in the Joe A. Adams Student Center on the Ridgeland Campus. Participating schools included: Benton Academy, Durant Public School, Germantown Middle School, Madison Middle School, McAdams Middle, Saint Andrews, Shirley D. Simmons Middle and Tri-County Academy.
Winners of the competition included: Sarah LeRoux from Madison Middle, first place for eighth grade; Leo Mei from Madison Middle, first place for seventh grade; Shreenithi Lakshminarayanan from Germantown Middle, second place for eighth grade; Kenny Suzuki from Madison Middle, second place for seventh grade; John McElroy from Saint Andrews, third place for eighth grade and Dhanush Kondabathini from Germantown Middle, third place for seventh grade.
The tournament consists of three levels of testing and at each level, students take a 50-item multiple-choice test which is aligned with the Mississippi Career and College Readiness Standards. The first level is local with tests is given on a specified date at each school that wishes to participate in the tournament. The students with the top two scores in both seventh and eighth grade are the ones who participated at the district level at their local community college. The first and second place winners in all the district competitions, including the one held today at Holmes, will participate in the state competition on April 7 held at Hinds Community College.
