On May 16, Holmes Community College Police Officer Sgt. Carzell Cavett received a Metro Area Top Cop award during Mississippi's annual Police Memorial & Appreciation Day luncheon. These awards are presented each year to outstanding federal, state, and local law enforcement officers by the Mississippi Center for Police & Sheriffs.

The National Association of Police Officers launched this awards program in 1994 as a means to pay tribute to those officers who serve above and beyond the call of duty. These officers are nominated for this honor by their respective chiefs or sheriffs for outstanding service during the preceding calendar year. Sgt. Cavett was nominated by Holmes CC Police Chief Chris Dill for his efforts to keep everyone safe on campus by enforcing state laws as well as campus rules and regulations.

"Sgt. Cavett is kind, courteous and professional in these efforts and exemplifies the kind of police officer we want and need on our campus," Dill said. "He is very dependable and rarely ever takes a day off. If anyone needs help, they know they can go to him and he will do whatever he can to solve the problem."

Sgt. Cavett has served on the Holmes Ridgeland Campus for 13 years. Ridgeland Campus Vice President Dr. Don Burnham also commented on Sgt. Cavett's strong problem-solving abilities and dependable nature.

"I am proud that Sgt. Cavett received this award," said Ridgeland Campus Vice President Dr. Don Burnham. "This award is well-deserved as he has been a steadfast and positive influence on the Ridgeland Campus. One of his greatest attributes is the ability to resolve campus issues in a manner that maintains safety and the dignity of all involved parties. He understands the meaning of providing good customer service."
