Alexis Kenyatta Ellis of Lexington, a 2002 Holmes Community College alumna, recently had her article published in Mississippi Christian Living magazine. The piece, titled “From Poet to Psychiatric Ward and Beyond,” explores Ellis’ personal journey and transformation through mental health challenges, faith and resilience.
In her article, Ellis shares her story of struggling with mental health issues, finding hope and ultimately discovering a path to healing. The piece offers readers an honest, raw account of her experiences and emphasizes the power of faith and support in overcoming adversity.
“I wanted to share my story to somehow help others who suffer from mental illness know they can still be happy and achieve their dreams,” Ellis said. “It just takes determination, believing in God and a strong faith in yourself that you are able to overcome whatever you go through.”
While at Holmes, Ellis wrote for The Growl newspaper and was a member of the Creative Arts Club, giving her experience getting published. She began publishing her poetry online on the website Associated Content in 2008, and started to gain notoriety a few years later. Ellis also earned a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Arizona Global Campus. She is a member of Maynie Street Church of Christ in Yazoo City and in her spare time, she enjoys volunteering, transcribing and watching retro television.
