Gardner is 2016 World War II honoree The Holmes Community College 2016 is proud to honor the Montpelier native Burnis Theodore Gardner (Class of '50) as the Holmes Community College World War II Honoree. The award will be presented on Oct. 29 at this year's Homecoming Celebration held on the Goodman Campus.
Mr. Gardner met his wife at Holmes Junior College when she attended from 1949-1950. "We got married on Aug. 18, 1950, and just celebrated 66 years together," Gardner said.
A World War II veteran, Gardner was a member of the Sixth Marine Division serving in Okinawa. He served as a U.S. Marine from June of 1944 to August of 1946, attended Holmes Junior College from 1948-1950, and then returned as a U.S. Marine to serve in the Korean War from September of 1950 to November of 1951. Upon returning from war, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 followed by his master's in 1958, both from Mississippi Southern College (today known as the University of Southern Mississippi).
Now retired, Gardner taught industrial arts (mechanical drawing and shop) for over 30 years in the Jackson Public School system, teaching at both Siwell Junior High and Hardy Junior High School. Today, he and his wife, Clytice Robertson Gardner, reside in Brandon.Save
