English instructor Chad Moorer announced the winners of the 2023 Creative Writing Contest for the Holmes Community College Goodman Campus. All winners receive cash prizes furnished by the Holmes Foundation. First and second place winners are forwarded to the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association Contest and will be published in Holmes’ literary magazine, Reflections.
In the Poetry Category, Casey Winstead of Yazoo City won first place for “Confusion,” Madison Clark of Maben placed second for “Music Can Be So Immature” and Jordan Barnes of Madison won third place for “Empty.”
In the Short Story Category, Katelyn Jones of Sallis won first place for “November to Now,” Demeria Moore of Goodman won second place for “Emiki’s Secret” and Danny Shumaker of Clinton came in third place for “Halloween Night.”
In the Creative Non-Fiction (personal essay) division, Colton DeShazo of D’Iberville won first place for “From Spectator to the Champion,” Julie Farmer of Durant won second for “Creating My Own Path” and Garian Edwards of Grenada came in third for “16 Hours: Life Gone Wrong.”
Finally, in the Literary Essay Category, Jones won first place for “Letters of Impact in The Coquette,” Farmer won second for “The Case of ‘Desiree’s Baby’” and Aaliyah Sansom of Ridgeland came in third for “A Good Christian Is Hard to Find.”
