Holmes Ridgeland celebrates graduates of AWS Information Infrastructure Apprenticeship Program

Holmes Community College recently hosted its second cohort of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship (I2PA) program. The college launched the inaugural cohort in fall 2024, becoming the first institution in Mississippi—and only the third in the nation—to offer the program. This paid, four-week training is designed to equip participants with the skills needed for high-demand careers in the global information economy. The program concluded on June 27 with a graduation ceremony and networking event, where graduates had the opportunity to connect with AWS subject matter experts, as well as industry vendors and contractors.

The latest cohort ran from June 2–27 on the Ridgeland Campus, with classes meeting Monday through Friday under the instruction of Cham Blain, Ben Kay and Larry Tait. Hinds Community College workforce instructor Casey Hutson shadowed the instructors, as well, in preparation for a future I2PA class at Hinds. In addition to the core instructors, various industry professionals led specialized training sessions throughout the program.

Graduates of the program included Kwavon Anderson, Arrington Anthony, Edwin Bernard, Henry Bufkin, Christopher Codjoe, Elijah Fletcher, Juan Garcia, Terrance D. Gaston, Mario Gonzalez, Andrea Jackson, Johnnie Jefferson, Markell Jones, Tatyana Mack, Tredarius McPherson, Daniel McGowan, Kyle Raynes, Shemekia Robinson, Jabari Ross, Malcolm Shelwood, Dwena Smoots, Christian Wilder and Kenneth Williams.

Participants completed 30 hours of hands-on instruction each week, using field-relevant tools and materials to build job-ready skills in cloud technology, networking and security. They learned about mission-critical building projects, including fiber optics, electrical and mechanical systems, computer servers, and the software used to design and construct these systems.

In addition to technical skills, the program emphasized essential workplace competencies such as problem-solving, time management, teamwork and effective communication. Graduates earned industry-recognized certifications, including AWS I2PA and OSHA 10, and received compensation during their training.

The program is part of AWS’s broader initiative to create more accessible pathways into high-growth tech careers and support a more diverse and inclusive workforce. It also aligns with Holmes’ mission to offer high-quality, relevant educational opportunities that prepare individuals for success in today’s global economy.
