OTA students published in ADVANCE magazine
Students in the Holmes Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program recently became the first in the state to have students published in a scholarly publication. Fourteen OTA students contributed to an article on postural alignment that was published in the industry magazine ADVANCE for Occupational Therapy Practitioners. ADVANCE offers cutting-edge strategies, innovations, salary information and more for those in the field of occupational therapy.
The students who contributed to the article are: Shelby Brohaugh, Valerie Hill, Morgan Inman, Tiah Jones, Hannah Moore, Thomas Moore, Micah Patterson, Hannah Poole, Jordyn Potter, Jasmine Proctor, Cassidy Sasser, Chelsea Weeks, Monica Wilkins, and Ambric Williams. The program is directed by Kana Williams, and instructed by Williams and Jason Miles.
"I am so very proud of them!" Williams said. "I'm encouraging anyone who comes across one of our students to please praise their efforts – being published in any OT scholarly publication is a gigantic feat!"

The OTA program is a two-year/five-consecutive-semester program of study that prepares students to work as co-participants in the entire occupational therapy process at the discretion of the supervising licensed occupational therapists. Graduates of the OTA program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the Occupational Therapy Assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), eligible to obtain licensure to practice in the state of Mississippi.
From the competitive and selective application process, applicants are chosen to enter the program each fall. For the past two years, Holmes has had a 100 percent pass rate of the NBCOT exam by the program's graduates.
