Trussell is Northern District Adult Basic Education Teacher of the Year

Tommy Trussell of Holmes Community College was named the Northern District Adult Basic Education Teacher of the Year at the Mississippi Association of Adult and Community Education (MAACE) Conference on June 6. Trussell, an Adult Education/High School Equivalency (HSE) instructor, works at The Attala Center in Kosciusko.

"I am proud of Tommy Trussell and glad that the Mississippi Association of Adult and Community Education recognizes his dedication to his students and education," said Vice President of Workforce Development Dr. Mike Blankenship. "Tommy truly cares about each and every student that he works with and he is an asset to Holmes Community College and the community that he serves."

MAACE is a privately-held organization in Kosciusko that works to stimulate local, state and regional efforts and encourage mutual cooperation and support for adult and community education statewide. During the MAACE Conference, the organization recognizes outstanding students, instructors, administrators and support staff. MAACE also provides attendees with staff development training and a forum for adult/community educators to discuss techniques, methods, materials, programs, problems and challenges which contribute to fostering the educational processes beyond traditional education programs.

"Tommy is most deserving of Teacher of the Year Award," said District Director of Adult Education/HSD Earline Russell-Smith. "Tommy cares about the 'whole student,' working to make sure that his students succeed academically and mature socially. He knows the background of every student in his class. He makes sure the students' needs are top priority and has a strong and loving hand that demands respect from his students. He is able to reach students where others have failed. It takes a special person to show students who are at risk that they are important and they will achieve."
