Adcock to receive prestigious Lyceum Scholarship
Being a good student who was involved in extracurricular activities has paid off for Holmes Community College sophomore Taylor Adcock; it was announced today she was one of 10 community college students from Mississippi who will be awarded the University of Mississippi's highest scholarship for transfer students, the Lyceum Scholarship.
Adcock will receive full resident tuition for two years for this scholarship which totals $6,660 per year. The Lyceum Scholarship is for transfer students with at least a 3.0 GPA and 48 transferable community college credit hours and an exemplary record of leadership and service.
Adcock, the daughter of Jeremy and Beth Adcock of Sallis, came to Holmes as a physical science major with a pre-pharmacy emphasis. "I have had my heart set on pharmacy since my senior year," says Adcock. "I knew that Holmes had a strong math and science department that would prepare me for my education at Ole Miss. The instructors (and Rae Anne Haffey) here encouraged me to begin working at a local pharmacy to give me experience."
The Central Holmes Christian School graduate has always had her heart set on Holmes Community College. "Holmes has been really good," she said. "I have loved the feeling of home here at Holmes. All of the instructors have been encouraging and helped me pursue all of my academic success and aspirations."
"The Holmes Plus program has given me the opportunity to learn about areas of medicine and engineering and how important the two work together," she said. "The Holmes Plus advisors mean a great deal to me, and I know that I would not be where I am today without them."
Knowing what the scholarship means to her, Adcock stressed the importance of being involved on your campus. "You get out of Holmes what you put in it," Adcock said. "If you go to class and go home you are not going to get the same experiences if you get involved. I believe if you put energy into your college education, you'll get a lot out of it."
To go along with her 4.0 GPA, Adcock has been a member of the Holmes Community College Holmes Plus program for Engineering and Science Majors for the last two years, has been a member of the Ambassador Recruiting Team, and has been a Phi Theta Kappa executive officer. She is also a member of the Holmes Community College Baptist Student Union and has been a work-study for the Chemistry Department on the Goodman Campus.
In addition to the Lyceum Scholarship, Adcock won the HEADWAE award, was an All-Mississippi Academic First Team member, was elected to the Hall of Fall at Holmes Community College, and received the Order of the Golden Key, the Wesley David Rule Mathematics Award, Physical Science Award, and Holmes Plus Award. She will also receive the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship, the Community College Academic Excellence Scholarship, and a scholarship given for the Chancellor's Leadership Class in which 25 are given to community college students.
The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship is awarded to transfer students with a 3.5 GPA on at least 48 transferable community college credit hours and membership in Phi Theta Kappa. The Community College Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded to Community College students with a 3.0 overall transfer GPA and 48 transferable community college credit hours. Students must be enrolled full-time to receive this award. The three scholarships combined will mean an additional $10,000 in scholarship money for Adcock.
