BestColleges.com has selected Holmes Community College as one of the Best Community Colleges in Mississippi for 2017. Holmes was ranked No. 5 out the 15 community colleges in the state.

The Holmes Community College Goodman Campus will hold an Electrical Lineman Program information meeting for those interested in being a part of the fall 2017 cohort on Tuesday, April 18 at 5 p.m. in the Science and Mathematics Building Auditorium. The meeting is mandatory for all potential students who are interested in applying to the 16-week training program.

Holmes Community College students Daphna Jill Allen, Ashley Hatch, Emily Lamkin, Brittany Nicole Moffett, and Aundria Price were honored at the All-Mississippi Community College Academic Team Recognition Luncheon on March 22. Held at the Jackson Convention Center, the luncheon recognized those students named to both the All-Mississippi First Team and Second Team. The program was established by the Mississippi Association for Community and Junior Colleges, the Mississippi Community College Board, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community.

The SkillsUSA chapters from all three Holmes Community College campuses successfully competed in the annual competition hosted by the Mississippi Department of Education at the Jackson Convention Center Feb. 28-March 1. The first place winners will be traveling to the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky, June 19-23.

Overall Holmes took home 13 awards: seven from the Goodman Campus, four from Grenada, and two from Ridgeland. Goodman SkillsUSA students Jenna Cummings, Kevin Luckett, Lauren Martin, David Orduna, Ann Pohlig, Lakesha Rand, and Hallie Westbrook performed the official closing out of the meeting; an honor bestowed on them for winning first place in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies category. Morgan Lancaster and Ivory Smith also took home a first place win for Esthetics.

Other Goodman students brought home medals, as well. Paige Hitt and Caitlyn Pounders placed third in the Nail Care division, Michelle McMullough placed third in Cosmetology, Todd Ingle placed third in Collision Repair, Josh Saxton placed third in Appliance Repair, and Clark Tyner placed third in Technical Math.

From the Grenada Campus, there were two first place and two second place wins. Brittany Starnes won first place in Medical Terminology, and Meredith Moore brought home first for First Aid/CPR. In the Job Interview category, Angela Stowers won second place, and Marlena Pendleton won second in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Ridgeland Campus students Dmorris Walker and Denzel Thompson both brought home third place wins from the competition. Walker placed third in Job Skill Demonstration, and Thompson in Job Interview.

The Holmes Yazoo Educational Center will offer a Fundamentals of Dry Wall course beginning April 17.

The Holmes Community College Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, housed on the Ridgeland Campus, inducted 27 new members into the honor society on March 6 in the D.P. “Pat” McGowan Workforce Training Center auditorium.

Bayley Cook of Winona was named 2017 Most Beautiful in Holmes Community College’s Parade of Beauties pageant held Feb. 28 on the Goodman Campus. Cook, daughter of Shannon and Robyn Dunn, and of Rod and Renee Cook, is a freshman pre-dental hygiene major on the Grenada Campus.

The Holmes Community College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students were a part of the 2017 Mississippi Physical Therapy Association’s (MPTA) Physical Therapy Legislative Day.

On Friday, Nov. 4, Holmes Community College lineman school graduate Ben Bowman (Class of Spring 2013) and an Entergy co-worker put their training into action responding to a traffic accident near their worksite. By removing the driver of the car, performing CPR and utilizing an AED the two saved the man’s life.

A piano recital with Dr. Harlan Zackery, Jr. is set for March 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the D.P. “Pat” McGowan Workforce Training Center on the Holmes Ridgeland Campus. A reception will follow the recital in the lobby. The event is free and open to the public.
