Holmes Community College athletes not only performed well on the field this season, but also did outstanding work in the classroom with 71 being named scholar-athletes in the fall (3.4 GPA or higher), 60 in the spring and 63 for both fall and spring semesters with an overall GPA of 2.947.

Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus Surgical Technology graduate Bonnie Shelley Malone of Kosciusko was recently elected to be a student liaison for the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) during their national conference held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in June. She was also awarded a $1000 scholarship during the conference.

The Holmes Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students recently completed a pediatric day camp for the children at Warren-Yazoo Mental Health (WYMH) on the Yazoo campus. The OTA students led groups of children ranging from ages 5-17 daily in the month of June.

The world of adult education is dramatically changing for the better, and the Pugh family of Yazoo City is happy to be a part of it. Adult education programs, including those offered at Holmes Community College, now have a career pathway/transitional specialist on staff to assists students’ transition into the workforce or education/training once they receive their high school diploma. Through this newly-established position and opportunities it affords, Asher Pugh completed his GED and is now enrolled in the welding program at Holmes to begin this fall. Additionally, Asher’s experiences encouraged his father and brother to enroll at Holmes as well.

The Ridgeland Campus of Holmes Community College held a Pinning Ceremony for the Surgical Technology Class of 2017 on June 28 at Madison United Methodist Church. Six students were honored.

The Ridgeland Campus of Holmes Community College held a Pinning Ceremony for the graduating Practical Nursing Class of 2017 on June 22 at Broadmoor Baptist Church of Madison. Twelve students were honored during the ceremony.

The Holmes Community College Wellness Center is open for summer. The machine weights, free weights, cardiovascular machines and the pool are open for use Monday – Thursday 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m.-noon.

Earlier this year, Holmes Community College was named one of the nation’s Best Online Community Colleges for 2016 by AffordableCollegesOnline.org (ACO), a leader in higher education information, resources and rankings. In addition to the 10 rankings Holmes received for the 2016-2017 school year, the college earned an additional 10 rankings for 2017-2018.

Beginning in the fall of 2017, Holmes Community College will offer a three-hour journalism class for the first time in the institution’s history. The class, JOU 1313 – News Writing and Reporting I, is an introductory journalism course designed to teach news writing and reporting. Upon completion of this class, students will be able to understand reporting and fact-gathering, utilize various interviewing methods, construct a basic news article, implement source and fact-checking and understand/implement online reporting. For now, JOU 1313 will only be offered as an online course.
