BorgWarner adds Holmes alumnus to staff
Taylor Bishop of Sallis, an alumnus of Holmes Community College, recently joined the staff at BorgWarner, Inc., as an engineering intern. BorgWarner is a global product leader in powertrain solutions that focuses on engine optimization and transmission and all-wheel drive technology. The company has 74 locations in 19 countries, and has brought in $8 billion in sales, according to www.borgwarner.com. Bishop joined the staff of the location in Water Valley.
Bishop obtained his associate of arts degree from Holmes in 2014, graduating with a 4.0 and serving as valedictorian of his graduating class. As an engineering major on the Goodman Campus, he was elected to the Holmes Hall of Fame, served as vice president of the Kappa Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and was a member of the Baptist Student Union leadership team.
Upon graduation, Bishop continued his education at the University of Mississippi, earning his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in May 2016. At Ole Miss, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and carried a 3.58 GPA.
"Taylor Bishop was a student in my Engineering Physics I and II, Engineering Mechanics I and II, and Linear Algebra courses, said Jim Shirley, associate chair/instructor for the natural science department at Holmes. "He and I spent a great amount together in class and some study sessions.
Taylor's questions showed he had spent time trying to understand the homework problems and not just wanting an answer. He would often say 'this concept showed me why I needed those math classes required in engineering classes.'
I am proud of Taylor and our program; good students like Taylor are of the kind teachers love to have in their classes. He will make an outstanding employee for any job he is in."
In the last couple of years, Bishop has held a number of positions, all of which have contributed to his knowledge and skills in engineering. During the summer of 2014, he worked offshore as a roustabout for the Wood Group PSN. In 2015, he was employed at Ivey Mechanical Company as a fabrication helper, and from January 2015 until the present, as an operations technician at Arnold Bros Racing in Kosciusko.
